I’ve always been taught that time is a finite resource. There is only as much of it as there is. You can’t make more of it. You can’t wish it away and have less of it. It is finite.
Except, apparently, two days out of the year. When suddenly, through the questionable “magic” of Daylight Savings, we either gain or lose an hour of time. Where did it go? Nobody knows.
(Except in Arizona, of course. Thankfully, the powers that be in my state have decided that we have all the daylight we need, and so time remains finite and unchanging in Arizona, clearly the superior state.)
But on social media feeds and news outlets across the country today there has been significant wailing and moaning about that precious, lost hour and just how long it’s going to take to catch up.
All this got me thinking about time itself. Despite this weekend’s manipulations of the clock, time actually is a limited resource. We’ve only got so much of it. And as a contractor and a small business owner, I feel like I’m always in a race against the clock to get more done, make the most of the hours in my day, and spend my most precious resource–time–wisely and effectively.
What would you do to get an extra hour in your workday or a couple of hours over the course of your week? What would it mean for your productivity and your bottom line? It’s kind of exciting to think about.
While we can’t create actual minutes, I am convinced that we can be more efficient with the ones we’ve been given, particularly in our industry. The key to this is current, up-to-date technology. Too many of us waste too much time every day loading screens, waiting for drying docs, or trying to access photos for the job we’re working on. How many hours are we losing every week on mouse clicks alone? Now that, on the other hand, is almost painful to think about.
